Abstract
Abstracts-Clonidine which is used as a hypotensive agent has a side effect such as hyperglycemic effect.
In order to observe the hyperglycemic effect of clonidine in the case of combination theraphy with CNS acting drugs, such as CNS stimulants, tranquilizers, barbiturates, analgesics, 16 CNS acting drugs were administered to Sprague-Dawley rats and the changes of blood glucose levels were checked at every 30 minutes.
The results were summerized as followings.
1. Among CNS stimulants, pentetrazol, picrotoxin, strychnine and imipramine inhibited the hyperglycemic effect of clonidine while caffeine showed the additive effect. 2. Among tranquilizers, diazepam and chlorpromazine inhibited the the hyperglycemic effect of clonidine but haloperidol and reserpine had no effect on the clonidine side effect. 3. Among barbiturates, thiopental inhibited the hyperglycemic effect of clonidine but secobarbital and pentobarbital had no significant effect. 4. Among analgesics, morphine showed the inhibitory effect and naloxone and pentazocine had no effect. However, aspirin showed slight stimulating action on the hyperglycemic effect of clonidine.
